ZXMOTO 500F
ZXMOTO 500F Four-Cylinder Performance is Back
The ZXMOTO 500F is an exciting addition to the modern middleweight motorcycle market, combining the unmistakable character of an inline four-cylinder engine with muscular naked-bike styling, modern electronics and an impressive chassis specification.
While many motorcycles in this capacity class now use single-cylinder or parallel-twin engines, the ZXMOTO 500F takes a very different approach. Its 470cc liquid-cooled DOHC inline-four engine produces 54kW at 11,000rpm approximately 72.4bhp and 48Nm of torque at 9,500rpm.
The result is a motorcycle with the smoothness, rev-hungry performance and distinctive soundtrack that make four-cylinder motorcycles so enjoyable to ride, packaged into a manageable middleweight machine.
Available from Biking Direct with motorcycle finance options and nationwide UK delivery, the ZXMOTO 500F is an interesting choice whether you’re buying locally or looking for your next motorcycle from elsewhere in the country.
470cc DOHC Inline-Four Engine
The biggest reason to take notice of the ZXMOTO 500F is its engine.
The 470cc power unit uses four cylinders, double overhead camshafts and 16 valves, with liquid cooling and a 12.9:1 compression ratio. Maximum output is 54kW at 11,000rpm, equivalent to approximately 72.4bhp, while peak torque of 48Nm arrives at 9,500rpm.
Those relatively high engine speeds are part of the attraction. Instead of delivering everything low in the rev range, the four-cylinder 500F encourages the rider to explore the engine, providing the increasingly rare experience of a smaller-capacity, high-revving inline-four motorcycle.
Fuel is delivered by BOSCH electronic fuel injection, while a wet multi-plate slipper clutch helps control engine braking during aggressive downshifts and contributes to smoother corner entry.
Classic Naked-Bike Styling Meets Modern Technology
ZXMOTO has clearly looked towards the great Japanese naked motorcycles of the 1980s and 1990s for inspiration. The exposed four-cylinder engine, muscular fuel tank, upright proportions and traditional round headlight give the 500F a purposeful retro character.
But this isn’t an old motorcycle underneath.
The classic round headlight incorporates modern LED lighting, while the retro-inspired twin-dial instrument arrangement uses modern digital electronics. It’s an appealing combination for riders who enjoy traditional motorcycle design but still want contemporary reliability, performance and equipment.
Fully Adjustable Inverted Front Suspension
The chassis specification shows that ZXMOTO hasn’t concentrated solely on the engine.
At the front, the 500F uses inverted suspension forks with adjustable damping. ZXMOTO describes the front suspension as fully adjustable, providing riders with considerably more scope to tailor the motorcycle’s behaviour than a basic non-adjustable fork.
A rear monoshock works with an integrated steel trellis diamond frame and dual-sided aluminium-alloy swingarm to create a modern chassis beneath the retro bodywork.
The combination of a relatively compact 1,395mm wheelbase, 17-inch wheels and 175kg kerb weight should give the 500F the manageable dimensions expected from a middleweight naked motorcycle.
Twin 300mm Front Discs, ABS & Traction Control
With more than 70bhp available, strong braking equipment matters. The ZXMOTO 500F uses dual 300mm floating front brake discs with twin two-piston floating calipers.
At the rear is a 220mm disc with a single-piston floating caliper.
Dual-channel ABS provides additional assistance during hard braking or when grip is reduced, helping prevent wheel lock at both ends of the motorcycle.
The 500F also features switchable traction control. The system provides another layer of electronic rider assistance by helping manage excessive rear-wheel slip under acceleration, while its switchable operation gives riders the option of greater manual control when appropriate.
Wide 180 Rear Tyre
The 500F uses cast aluminium-alloy 17-inch wheels with a 120/70-17 front tyre and substantial 180/55-17 rear tyre.
That wide rear tyre isn’t only functional it also gives the rear of the motorcycle the muscular stance traditionally associated with much larger four-cylinder naked bikes.
Comfortable, Manageable Dimensions
A 795mm seat height makes the ZXMOTO 500F relatively approachable for a broad range of riders, while its 175kg kerb weight keeps the overall package manageable.
The riding position and naked-bike layout make it suitable for everyday riding as well as weekend enjoyment, while the 15.5-litre fuel tank provides useful capacity for longer journeys.
This combination is important. The 500F may have the sound and character of a traditional four-cylinder motorcycle, but riders don’t have to deal with the physical size and weight associated with many larger-capacity inline-four machines.
A Refreshingly Different Middleweight Motorcycle
The ZXMOTO 500F stands out because it doesn’t simply follow the established middleweight formula.
There are plenty of parallel-twin motorcycles available. There are plenty of retro-styled motorcycles too. Far fewer combine that classic styling with a compact 470cc four-cylinder engine capable of revving beyond 11,000rpm.
For riders who grew up around the great Japanese four-cylinder motorcycles, the specification may bring back some welcome memories. For younger riders, it offers the opportunity to experience a type of engine that has become increasingly unusual in smaller-capacity road motorcycles.
